Amsterdam

To say the least it was the most interesting weekend thus far in my European adventures. Between the red light district, weed being legal and the city being filled with all sorts of people it was bound to be a interesting few days.

On Friday we went got in around 6:30, we went to our hostel (bob youth hostel), and then went and got dinner in this little hole in the wall place. We then went back  and met up with the group of people from our program who we were staying with. We then went out to the bars/clubs. The club we went to was called Chicago. We got turned away from two other clubs because you have to know who is preforming at the club otherwise they won't let you in, which of course we learned the hardest. Finally the lady letting people in at Chicago took pity on us and let us in. We stayed till about 2am which I don't know how most people in Europe stay out until 5am because I felt dead by 2am. The music was European house/trance music, which was fun to dance to.

On Saturday we had a got up and had breakfast, then went on a Cannal tour through Amsterdam. We got to see some popular spots in Amsterdam while also enjoying all the beautiful architecture of the buildings. I noticed that most of the building in Amsterdam are not perfectly straight, most are slanted to the left or right or look like they are leaning forward. After the Cannal tower we went to the Sex Museum which was interesting to say the least. We walked around the city then went back to the hostel to meet up with the rest of our group. A few of us went to a resturant that served a few Dutch dishes and I got the only vegetarian one on the menu which was actually quite good and different from what I am used to. Later we all went to the Red Light District. It was wierd seeing women wearing close to nothing standing in a window waiting for someone to come up and pay them to have sex. We went to a bar in the red light district and it was three stories but since weed is legal in Amsterdam they have smoking rooms or Cafes where you can go and smoke in. I went home early with a few people that night.

On Sunday, we went to breakfast then walked to the Van Gogh Museum. The museum is four stories and tells Van Gogh's life story. His paintings and drawings are beautiful!! We spent close to two hours walking around it. After we walked to the I AMsterdam sign. We then went to the cobra cafe next to the letters. After we headed back to the hostel where everyone else but my roommate (Tarah) left because they have class on Monday. Tarah and I then checked in to our room for the night and we went and walked around Amsterdam. We went to an authentic Dutch resturant which was delicious (the water was also free there which made me extremely happy, also for the those who don't know you have to pay for water in Amsterdam at restaurants). We had bread and butter and cheese cubes with musturd on the side. (The cheese is amazing here) Tarah got leek soup with eel, which ended up tasting like liquid musturd. I then got potato mash and vegetables which was very good.

On Monday, Tarah and I went to the De Pijp area which has a huge outdoor street market. We had breakfast at this little resturant which was delicious. I got a Brie and herb omlete. We walked around the market around breakfast was fun to see the stuf the sold there. We took the tram to do another Cannal tour because Tarah hadn't done one yet. As soon as that finished we rushed over to the Anme Frank House. We walked through and got to read about her life and see the home she hid in for 2 years. It was a really amazing place that you should take the oppertunityo see if you evero to Amsterdam. (You should prenup tickets because of you don't you have to wait in a huge line for a long time) After we walked to central station to take the tram to where our bus was.

Amsterdam was a pretty awesome city and I felt like I could have defiantly stayed a few more days to see everything. Hopefully one day I'll go backt to be able to see more of it!

The last two weeks!

The last two weeks have been very busy. I have started classes (unfortunately) but I've also meet some prety awesome people and have planned some trips for the quarter...
My program took a bus tour last week around Brussels and got to see some of the tourist sights. I've also discovered the night live in Brussels which I must say is a good time. I've also finally learned how to use the metro and bus lines here (thank you google maps). I have a greater appreciation for gloves and scarves now due to the fact its on average 35 degrees here every day.
I'm currently in Amsterdam with about 16+ people from my program. (Got a round trip ticket from Megabus for 16euros!) I'll be here til Monday night I'll post once I get back!

First day in Belgium

I arrived in Belgium at 8am Saturday morning yesterday. I was completely confused on time because it felt like it was only 11:30 at night (california time). I took a cab to my hostel (sleep well hostel) with four other people from my program. We ended up hanging out in another girls room because our room wasn't ready till three. So we eventually ventured out to get food at noon. We then went to the shopping mall to pass some time. Eventually we got our room and took about a 4 hour nap because I had been awake for over 24hrs at this point.
Around 7pm I got ready to go out with the people from my program that had arrived early also. The 13 of us went to the central station and met our program coordinators. They took us around the grand square in downtown Brussels (pictured below). We also saw the famous statue of the little peeing boy. (Picture below). The statue is known for being dressed up in different outfits. We were taken to a cafe which is famous for the puppets they have hanging throughout. Our program coordinator bought everyone there drinks. Michelangelo (program coordinator) recommended me a drink since I don't know anything about Belgian beers. (The one he recommended to me is pictured below). I was surprised how good it was! And then around 11:30pm we went to a popular club in downtown called Delirium.
For the rest of this week I have orientation for my ciee program and my school.

This is the Grand Square.

Packing For Study Abroad

Today I have started packing for my study abroad in Belgium. I have come to the realization that I want to bring all most my whole closet which is not realistic. My goal is to bring one large suitcase, my carryon bag and backpack. Which means I need to go through the multiple stacks of clothing on the floor of my room.

3 MORE DAYS!!!

This Blog.

This blog is meant to show my experiences while living in Belgium and traveling around Europe. I will be abroad from January-May. This will show my thoughts and experiences and suggestions I would want to give others if they go to the same places I go. Hopefully this will show my friends and family what I am doing as well as showing others what they can visit if they go to Europe.
